If you write to the person with your real Email address, you may find a lot of SPAM showing up because they will then have a real Email address to add to the SPAM lists. Selling Email addresses is a big business. That is why websites such as this one, use their own Message center. No need to give out an Email address to a stranger. You can exchange messages right here. Other places such as MySpace also have their own in-house message system for members. The African scam from Liberia or more often from Nigeria is old, but still used. NEVER give out any ID info related to these "proposals." Although, if you have money to burn, you can just send it directly to me. With the inflated prices for test strips and insulin, I can use all the money you don't want. Ha-ha

I get lots of them every day. There the bane of the net. If my memory serves me, something like SEVENTY percent of all e-mail sent is spam. They get your address by all sorts of semi-nefarious means. For example, web crawlers, that hunt through all the web pages looking for e-mail addresses. They even use random addresses; I own the domain name drsimon.co.nz, so they send e-mails to random names @drsimon.co.nz on the principle that they might just strike lucky. As sending them costs the spammer nothing, they simply don't care.

The rule for us is simple. Any sob story or vast sum of money is a scam - hit the delete button. Don't reply! Sad to say Sammy, but your e-mail address is now KNOWN to be real, so you'll probably get more spam now.

I get similar e-mails almost on a daily basis. I don't know where they come from or why I get them.
